Boro Boss Kim Hellberg Shrugs Off England Speculation for Will Lankshear

2 November 2026

Will Lankshear has been a standout performer for Middlesbrough, featuring the full 90 minutes in just four of the team's 13 Championship matches so far this season. After netting two goals in a convincing 3-0 victory over Charlton Athletic, Lankshear has now scored an incredible 15 goals in 16 appearances across all competitions, helping to keep Boro at the summit of the Championship. Since joining from Tottenham this summer, the 21-year-old has found the net 13 times in just as many Championship outings, drawing attention not just from fans but also from the wider football community. England’s head coach Thomas Tuchel recently hinted that he remains open to selecting players outside the Premier League, which raises the question of whether Lankshear might earn a surprise call-up for the upcoming Nations League matches against Spain and Croatia. When asked about Lankshear's potential inclusion in the national squad, Hellberg admitted, "I have no clue." He added, "I've got a lot on my plate regarding my own squad and how we’re managing ins and outs, so I’ll leave that one to others." Lankshear's performances have been nothing short of remarkable; he has found the back of the net in all but one of his home matches at the Riverside. The young striker has scored two goals in four different games, showcasing his ability to deliver when it counts. Since the international break in September, he has really turned up the heat, netting seven times in just five games, including four goals in his last two outings against Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic. In comparison, the top English scorer in the Premier League, Morgan Rogers, has only five goals, while Leeds United's Dominic Calvert-Lewin sits at four. Interestingly, Lankshear has even outscored England captain Harry Kane this season, who has tallied 12 goals in 14 matches for Bayern Munich and the national team. Having recently represented the England Under-21 side, Hellberg believes Lankshear is already a more complete player than the one who arrived at Teesside a few months ago. "Will is fantastic," Hellberg told BBC Radio Tees. "He gives his all every day. You can see the progress he’s made this season. When he joined us, he was incredible in front of goal, but he’s also developed his defensive skills, which we’ve worked on together. I’m thrilled he scored against Charlton after pressing high. He’s a brilliant lad." Hellberg is clearly pleased with the direction Lankshear is heading, but for now, the focus remains on Middlesbrough’s campaign.
